About the book

Settlers Easter Creek Adare From Fire to Freedom

In 1875, four brothers -Michael, James, John and Denis Cahill settled in Christmas Creek - south of the newly gazetted town of Beaudesert.  They started dairying, pioneering a way of life for their family that would last over 100 years.

This prequel is inspired by their story and details the fictionalised imaginings of the Cahaley family in their town of Adare, Ireland as they make the decision to emigrate.

Fire - It started with a spark, a small, glowing ember, lit by a letter from afar.  Accelerated by a vengeful hand, the spark grew, fanned into flames, dancing and leaping until it consumed all, leaving their world black and charred.

From the ash, Dinny Cahaley and his family, living in 1874 Ireland, are forced to make a decision - one that would change their destiny and set their sites upon life on a faraway shore.  But first, there are obstacles to face - the divide between class, the recovery from grief and loss, past jealousies, a wild stallion and an enemy plotting revenge - all the while adhering to the bond that is cód deartháireacha, the code between brothers.

Sneak Peak

‘Holy doozers!’ The murmured and wondrous, quiet expulsion of air rose like a fog as his breath hit the frosty morn and condensed.

Prologue 2015

Prologue

Thursday, 9th July 1874

‘Holy doozers, Mickie! Let’s go!’ In excitement, Dinny Cahaley raked his hand through his unruly thick sun-streaked mop, the action doing nothing to discourage his hairstyle’s impression that he had just got out of bed.

But Australia, Leaid!

Chapter 1

Wednesday, July 15th 1874

Locked into a corner, with four others of his kind, his eyes darted frantically from side to side, looking for a means of escape. There was space on the right, or maybe the left, to dodge the slight figure on horseback, but he would have to be quick on his feet. He snorted, a grunt of defiance and challenge, baiting his chaser to close in, in order to give him the angles needed to get around and away. He knew that it was him alone that they wanted and that the others would be left in peace.

I'll Come with you Dinny

Chapter 3

James Cahaley perched upon the top of the high balcony wall, one floor up, with one leg straddled either side to maintain his balance. Despite a heaving chest from the exertion of his climb, he was careful to stay silent and grateful for the new moon, which had plunged the late evening into darkness.

A Midnight Tryst

Chapter 6

‘What could tie a family together more than weeding?’ Dinny’s rhetorical question was aimed at his three brothers, all lined up next to him on hands and knees digging in the dirt, sweat staining their armpits. He seemed to be the only one who was smiling, probably because he was fantasising about how they could make Ma a rose garden five times bigger than this one, with rose heads double the size, if they moved to Australia. His enthusiasm of the days before had not yet been dampened by time.

Weeding

Chapter 12

‘Are you thinking about our daughter?’ Patrick asked Josie as he lifted the sheets and slid in next to her under their bedcovers. She had not spoken much since he had entered the room and had gone about her preparations for bed in a starey-eyed trance. The scene at dinner had been unfortunate but necessary, and its echo hung in the air like the shadow of the mountain. But Patrick could see, with the perception of long-term connection, that it was the ghost conjured in the conversation, with its threat of loss and anguish, that had wounded Josie most keenly and was demanding of her attention now.

About the author

A country spirit born in the city of Brisbane, Melissa’s love of reading and writing started from a very young age. One of her first memories was of creating clumsy song lyrics as a preschool child, and her teens and early twenties had her penning satirical poems to mark her friend’s milestone birthdays. For the many years following, study, work, marriage and children got in the way of artistic endeavour and her literary soul was pushed to the side by the practicalities of life. Her move to Beaudesert in 2012, when her Salisbury house proved too small for her growing family, lit a new spark in her creative journey. She found herself in a town steeped in family history and became fascinated with the stories of the settlers to the area. This led her to write a historical fiction novel, loosely based on her husband’s family and their journey from Ireland to Beaudesert. Over covid isolation, the characters took on a life of their own, growing their story to two books and providing a mindful time out from her busy life as a GP and mother to four amazing children. Once the writing was done and not knowing where to go from here, she joined the Scenic Rim Writers at the start of 2023 to learn from their experience. She found herself in a group of inspired writers and in the middle of the new project that was to become ‘Of Time and Place’. With zeal, she has provided five pieces to the book, all inspired by her new home and its history. She is very excited to see her works in print for the first time.
